  1. The Maastricht Treaty is a treaty on European 
  2. union, signed 10 Dec 1991 by leaders of 
  3. European Community (EC) nations at Maastricht 
  4. in the Netherlands, at a meeting convened to 
  5. agree on terms for political union. The 
  6. treaty was formally endorsed by the European
  7. Parliament April 1992 but its subsequent 
  8. rejection by the Danish in a June referendum 
  9. placed its future in jeopardy.
